Captains Corner

Well fans, as they say ‘winners are grinners’ and as I sit and write this I am grinning from ear to ear.

What a win, the boys all played with flair and style not seen since the Mark Hunter era. Due to some great recruiting by the Guantanamo Scouts and the clubs tradition of ‘developing young talent’, the club has truly moved into a new era. The win over Hagen’s Heroes was a truly historic moment as it was the first time the club has ever taken a point off the B-Liga stalwarts.

Think about it????? We made history, we beat Hagen’s Heroes 6 - 1 and we beat them by playing soccer. It was a real team effort to achieve the win and every one can take pride in the fact that they played a part in showing that Racing Guantanamo are not to be taken lightly.

During the indoor season we developed the ethos of PASSION, RESPECT and FOCUS which made us true contenders for the championship. If we can build on this, there is no reason that Racing Guantanamo can’t be lifting the cup and popping the champagne at the end of the season. We need to continue the momentum from the win against Hagen’s and look towards our next clash with the ‘Bad Boys’ of the BroomedesLiga, Broome City.

Guantanamo has traditionally found Broome City a bit of a hoodoo side, a curse that was cast off last season when we beat them 5 - 4 at Male Oval. Again it was a night that we made history, a feat we need to emmulate when we face off under lights at Father McMahon Oval in three weeks time. By approaching this game with the steely resolve and determination that we have become known for and standing true to our motto Crudus Orange Pro Exercitus, there is no doubt that we can take it to Broome City.

It will by no means be an easy game; it is going to be tough, it is going to be physical but we can beat Broome City if we play as a team. I’m looking for all Guantanamo players including myself to step up and take the game on. We need to do the things that we do well like move the ball around, push forward, mark tight at the back and generally give each other support. We also need to communicate as I believe this is the biggest thing holding us back as a team.

We need to beat Broome City and we can!!!!!!

Until then, all I can say is “Bring it on Boys!!!!” I can’t wait until the 14th of October. It is going to be a blockbuster and I’ll be sure to be sharpening my studs in preparation. Until then everyone have a good break and keep kicking goals.
