Resilient Guantanamo Rue Missed Chances

Tuesday, 25th September 2007

A full-strength Racing Guantanamo side failed to capitalise on some golden chances as they went down 8-1 to a Broome City side who had second place on the B-Liga table in their sights.

Guantanamo found themselves in unfamiliar territory with a full squad to choose from, minus the tall Dan Walker, who had gone to Perth on a fact-finding mission for the club, and Jon Falconer.

Captain Ryan Platten said before the game that he expected a strong Guantanamo side to push the Blues all the way and perhaps even pick up a win. The side started the match with intent, creating chances and locking up the Broome City strikers at the back.

Guantanamo showed again why they are the league up-and-comers, with some strong passing linking together the play. Sam McGinn and Joel Hamling again made a statement to the rest of the league, showing an understanding that is forging one of the leagues top strike duos.

Terrance Jack injected some pace into the Orange squad, while the return of Gordon Lawford ensured that the Guantanamo midfield was not without physical presence.

The team also welcomed back Tim Rowe, who performed steadily in the centre of defence, mopping up any wayward back-passes and slow Broome attacks. Freya Mason also returned to the squad, and again proved why she is the most highly-rated defender in the league, acting as a solid rock at the back and keeping the backline tight.

Jenaya Bell also was back from her 5 week trial with Turkish club Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor, and slotted into a midfield holding role in which she ably provided Guantanamo with some badly needed midfield support.

Guantanamo went into half time down by three goals, but the team still had the belief that they could cause the upset of the year if they could inject a bit more urgency into their play. A shuffle led to Tim Gray moving into the attack as a target man, which proved a deft move as the big man held the ball up well and caused any number of problems for the City defence.

Unfortunately, the upset was not to be, as City made the most of some quick counter-attacks, leaving Francois Kruger in the Guantanamo goal little to do but pluck the ball out of the back of the net. Kruger performed admirably again, coming to the rescue of his team several times with some excellent saves.

Luke Turner and David Aristei continued to improve on and off the ball, working hard to put pressure on the ball and provide opportunities for the Guantanamo attack.

The final score rounded out at 8-1, after a great attacking move saw Terrance Jack score the only goal for Guantanamo, leaving the Mighty Oranges rooted to the bottom of the table with only one match of the regular season to go.
