Historic First Win For Guantanamo Heroes 27th February 2008 Racing Guantanamo AFC recorded their first ever win after an impressive display against Italia FC. Fans on the sidelines threatened to mob the players in joy after seeing a huge 8 goals scored by the mighty Oranges. A stingy defence anchored by Captain Ryan Platten and marshalled by the ever impressive Francois Kruger ensured that the Italian team only scored 2 goals. The match started in uncertain terms as Guantanamo lost several star players before the whistle had even blown. Tim Rowe had to pull out of the squad after he succumbed to an exotic blonde illness. Gordon Lawford and Terrance Jack also pulled out after they suffered from a bout of Alzheimer’s, and were unable to find the venue. Dan Walker, one of the tallest players in the league, knocked himself out before the game walking under a doorframe and had to be rushed home to bed. Despite the hiccups, Platten and Vice-Captain Tim Gray pulled in a couple of last minute replacements in the form of new-boys Adam Sharnley and Steven Shaw, as well as familiar Guantanamo face Luke Turner. The game began well, with Guantanamo defending deep in their own half and hitting the Italians on the counter-attack. Luke Turner and Steven Shaw combined well to give Guantanamo a biting attack that produced the majority of the 8 goals. Sharnley took up a holding-midfield role, occasionally getting forward to worry the paper-thin Italian defence, while Platten took up a familiar role, playing sweeper just in front of Kruger in goal. The Italians seemed to struggle with the format of the futsal pitch, and Guantanamo punished their mistimed passes with some quick counters, worrying their goalkeeper time and time again. As the match wore on, it was clear that the Italian team were becoming frustrated, and referee Bill Shaw had to warn several of their players more than once about pulling back the men in orange. However, this did not faze the Guantanamo players, who seemed to have a total focus on winning the game. |

As the game wound up, tensions for the Italian team boiled over, with one of their players being sent off by the referee for repeated fouls. With the final whistle, the players in orange looked extremely pleased with their efforts as the capacity crowd went wild on the sidelines. This is the first win for the club many have predicted to face the wooden spoon for yet another season. Rumours are now swirling that Sharnley and Shaw have been offered contracts by the club, although it remains to be seen whether Shaw and Sons FC will accept the bid for one of their best players.
