Back to Reality For Guantanamo 5th March 2008 Racing Guantanamo will go back to the drawing board this week after being cruelly brought crashing back to earth with a 10-1 defeat against Broome City. The night did not start well for Guantanamo when star player Tim Rowe officially called time on his promising soccer career. Rowe said it was with a heavy heart that he hung up his boots, but that he was happy he left the club in a better position than when he started. Despite the drama off-field, the ecstasy of last week’s win looked like it would continue after Guantanamo took an early lead through new-signing Aziz. The team again defended well, and the Bill Shaw-lead Broome City could not find a way through the stubborn defence. The makeshift Guantanamo side, incorporating on-loan striker Joel Hamling, looked like it would continue its winning run, but a Broome City goal just before half-time sent doubts creeping through the team. As the second half began, tiredness began to set into the Guantanamo players who had only one substitute to ease their weary bones. Vice-captain Tim Gray was a pillar of strength at the back, showing the grit and determination of the Orange players, laying in challenges of steel to thwart the Broome City attack. Dan Walker came back into the squad and showed why he had been missed, providing a versatility that saw him playing in defence, midfield and even for a period as goalkeeper. Francois Kruger was again ‘The Rock’ in goals, and even proved that he can play outfield with a commanding run in midfield early in the second half. As the second half wore on, a brief five minute period saw Broome City lay on 5 goals which ripped the hope out of the Guantanamo players that they could somehow stage a comeback. The spirit of the team did not disappear however, and Broome City became frustrated that they could not break through the Guantanamo defence. |

Captain Ryan Platten missed an absolute sitter in the second half and blasted another against the post as he pushed forward looking for a goal to reignite his team. As the whistle blew for fulltime, the Guantanamo players huddled around planning already for next weeks match, proving that their season is far from over and that the other teams should not take them for granted.
