Guantanamo Draw But Forfeit Provides Points Wednesday 19th March 2008 Racing Guantanamo continued to improve on the court, thrashing out a draw with a hastily-assembled Team X last night at BRAC Arena. With most of the Team X squad MIA, it was left to the rest of the league to provide players to entertain the capacity crowd. The small squad led to the X’ers having to forfeit, providing Guantanamo with their first points of the season. With the pressure of having to win off the team, the Oranges took the opportunity to experiment with the side, drafting in new marquee player and former Fremantle Docker, Tony Delaney. Delaney had previously made a guest appearance for Guantanamo last year, but it was announced earlier in the day that the club had picked him up for the rest of the year, using most of their transfer war-chest in the process. With the squad list starting to settle, Guantanamo looked to test out different positions and concentrate on playing good quality football. As the match began, Francois Kruger showed just why he was voted the best player of 2007 by stringing together some high quality saves and taking control of his penalty area. The goalkeeper kept his team in it by swatting away any attack that Team X managed to throw at him. Delaney immediately proved why he is a force to be reckoned with by making thrusting forward runs whenever possible, and terrorising the opposing defence. Scoring an absolute screamer of a goal and setting another up for captain Ryan Platten to tap in, the former Docker was a fire in the belly of the Guantanamo heroes. |

Chris Hingston improved on his technique with a solid effort as defensive midfielder, while the ever-reliable Tim Gray again showed his worth to the team by reading the game like an old pro and blocking attack after attack from ever reaching Kruger in goals. Adam Shanley announced his entrance to the striker stage by netting four goals and constantly threatening from the middle of the pitch. The Scottish midfielder is really staking his claim for a spot up front, while Joel Hamling again put his case forward to be signed as a permanent Guantanamo member. The match see-sawed throughout the game, the score swinging in favour of Guantanamo before surging back to Team X. In the end, a draw was a worthy result, and the Mighty Oranges took heart from a job well done against some of the league’s best players. Racing Guantanamo Matchday Squad Final Score Attendance
