Big Win For Guantanamo

26th March 2008

Racing Guantanamo made it 6 points from a possible 6 in a hard fought match against the Mustangs at the BRAC Arena.

In a match billed by local football commentators as the ‘Most Liked Teams Derby’, the men in Orange proved that they could stand up and perform on the big occasions.

Guantanamo started the match missing big forward George Perera, who finally pulled himself from the lineup on advice from his doctors due to a tweaked calf muscle. Marquee signing Tony Delaney also withdrew as a precaution, and big fan favourite Dan Walker also was missing. The side welcomed back Terrance Jack, who had finally signed with the club again after protracted contract negotiations.

The match started off with Guantanamo pressing the Mustangs hard, but unable to find that killer touch in the final third of the pitch. The Oranges opted to start with Adam Shanley up front, but the Scot managed to punt several wide before finding his killer touch that saw him score four against Team X the week before. The Dreadlocked Bulldozer pushed through hard to slam the ball into the back of the net and causing the capacity crowd to go wild.

With the Oranges smelling blood in the water, Captain Ryan Platten pushed further up the field, linking well with Shanley to create a number of chances, and just missing with a sublime header after sneaking into the back post.

Tim Gray again gave it all for the side, thwarting Mustang attacks from the centre of the pitch. It was for primarily this reason that Francois Kruger in goal had so little to do for most of the match.

Jon Falconer showed his improvement with a confident performance which was capped with a fantastic goal from 10 metres out.

Guantanamo were pushed hard by a resilient Mustangs defence, and this stopped a number of shots being scored. The young team worked hard on the counter attack to put Chris Hingston under pressure at the back, but the defender deftly dealt with most of the pushes into Orange territory.

Platten almost broke both of his legs with a nasty slip at the Mustangs byline, going head over heels after chasing down the ball and hitting a wet patch of ground. The fall drew a gasp from the crowd as he smashed into the back wall of the arena, but the Captain amazed onlookers by getting back up straight away and brushing himself off.

As the match finished, it was Guantanamo who picked up the points, paying tribute to the challenge the Mustangs put before them. The match was played in the spirit expected of the leagues two most likeable teams, and earned healthy applause from football commentators all over the world.

The win sees Guantanamo climb to third, and vice-captain Tim Gray calling for an assault on the league title.
