Guantanamo Destroyed In Controversial Match 3rd April 2008 Racing Guantanamo were outclassed and outplayed in an entertaining match last night at BRAC. The match began in controversial circumstances when Broome Soccer Association President Mike Doyle made a last minute fixture change without consulting Guantanamo officials. Hagen’s Heroines made a request of the league that they be allowed to play early which was agreed to by the BSA, moving Team X into the slot. The Mighty Oranges appealed the decision on grounds that they had spent the week preparing a scouting for a match with Hagen’s Heroines and that the fixture swap had lead to the team going into the match ‘woefully unprepared’ and had taken a ‘psychological knock’. The match went ahead with Guantanamo fielding an under strength team that was missing George Perera who was still struggling with a calf injury, as well as Tony Delaney who flew south at the start of the week on international duty. Dan Walker also called time on his footballing career after a glorious eight months. It was smiles at the beginning for Gunatanamo after a swift goal from Adam Shanley gave the Oranges the lead. The feeling of euphoria was short-lived however, with Team X hitting back in quick succession, stunning the heroes in Orange. The Oranges found it hard to create space anywhere on the pitch, and were often caught with either all of the team defending or all attacking.

With a lack of coherency threatening to create a score blow-out, Guantanamo Captain Ryan Platten spoke at half time of the need to maintain a position and work to create space. The Oranges came together with a good display, but nothing seemed to go right in the final third. Tim Gray was again the stalwart of the Guantanamo team, using a physical presence to break up any X attack. Joel Hamling and Jon Falconer combined well at times to create havoc for the X defence but nothing went in, much to the dismay of the Orange fans on the sidelines. The match finished with Guantanamo totally outplayed, and leaving the team to wonder what may have been had the fixtures stayed the same. Racing Guantanamo Matchday Squad Final Score Attendance |
