Strong Season Finish for Guantanamo

21/5/08

Racing Guantanamo wrapped up the futsal season on Wednesday night with their forth win in a row.

Taking on the team of Hagen’s Heroines, the men in orange showed a passing style of football that had been missing from earlier rounds.

Tim Gray and Jo Tighe were again missing from the squad as Guantanamo looked to finish the season on a high note.

The match began well with captain Ryan Platten firing in a well-placed shot to put Guantanamo ahead after only one minute.

Guantanamo then sat back, allowing the Heroines to push forward in search of an equaliser. Indeed, the Oranges had not counted on the silky passing skills of the ladies and were on the back foot as goalkeeper Francois Kruger was called into action to make several nail biting saves.

The nerves did not last however, with Guantanamo going into the break up by three goals to nil.

In the second half, a wave of hysteria overtook Kruger as he channelled the spirit of Bruce Grobbelaar, providing some unbelieving gasps as he passed to the other team.

Some shouting between Platten and Kruger led to Platten being booked for unsportsmanlike conduct as Platten sought to get his goalkeeper back into the right state of mind.

As the match wore on, Andy Smyth and George Pereira showed their worth to the team with some excellent interplay and skill. The two carved up the Heroines defence on several occasion, with their style of play a joy to watch.

Toward the end of the match, the Heroines managed to get a shot on goal which was blocked by Platten on the goal line. The referee blew for a handball and booked Platten for a second time sending the captain off. This was the first red card in Broome Soccer Association history leading Guantanamo to lodge a formal protest with the BSA hierarchy.

With this, the last match in the Broomedesliga futsal season, Guantanamo finished an honourable third, giving hope for the upcoming B-Liga outdoor season.
