The Destruction of Racing Guantanamo 6th April 2009 Racing Guantanamo’s dreams of a first ever league title lay in tatters after being totally outplayed and outclassed by the in-form Sanga at BRAC last night. The Mighty Oranges came into the match again without influential and dogged midfielder Tim Gray, as well as Kane Fitzpatrick and Danny Pinchas. The team welcomed back Joel Hamling. An air of nervousness rippled around BRAC as the game began, with Guantanamo eager to prove they had really turned themselves into a footballing powerhouse. The match began well too, with Estonian Raiko firing low into the Sanga net to send the crowd into raptures. The joy was short lived however, as Sanga slowly turned the game to their favour. Their superior running and passing cut swathes through the Guantanamo defence, and it was only through the sheer determination of Martin Kessler that they did not manage to get a good shot on goal. ‘The Rock’ Francois Kruger was again in-form in goals, and his lightning reflexes managed to keep out the Sanga attack on a number of occasions, but even the presence of the Broome Soccer Association’s most awarded player was not enough to cow the opposition for long. Sanga began to really control the game, and captain Andy Smyth could feel the momentum slipping from his team. Towards the end of the first half, Guantanamo did manage to come back into the game, and several chances fell to Hamling and Kessler, but the pair just could not convert. It seemed that luck had deserted the team in Orange as they went into half time 4-1 down. Smyth tried to buoy his squad ahead of the second period, but the team could not settle on the ball, and Sanga punished them with 4 more goals. Chris Hingston, whose footballing road has come a long way showed determination in the centre of the park, while Terry Ragoonanan showed his knowledge of the game by getting into some excellent positions, but the Mighty Oranges just could not get the ball in the back of the net. The game ended with Guantanamo looking a little more comfortable on the ball, but with the realisation they had been totally out-played by a superior opponent. The result drops Guantanamo to third on the table with only one match left to play. Final Score Scorers Racing Guantanamo Matchday Squad
