Guantanamo Slip Up In Overdue Wake Up Call

Wednesday, 28th April 2010

I bring a heavy heart this week orange fans as both Racing and Sporting went down with guns blazing this week on our strive for glory and after a much hyped previous week it was a gentle bump to earth. A loss we had to have, a kick in the pants, a wake up call maybe but the orange brigade went down fighting in true Guantanamo spirit on Wednesday night at the PCYC.

Sporting Guantanamo Report

In the first match Sporting took on Sanga and it was a sleepy orange team that got jumped early and was consequently beaten in the first half. Jackson “solid” Cordingley  lead from the front and showed why he is the quiet achiever in the side overshadowing his much publicized teammates. Sporting had much of the ball but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net, some dogged and feisty displays in defense from Tim “doggy” Gray and Chris “it’s my birthday” Hingston and some fantastic saves from Seby “ where’s my gloves” Parasilliti the score could have been much more. Captain Andy “balls” Smyth rallied his troops at half time, and it worked. The boys dug deep and with a few goals and some encouraging support from the sidelines it was “game on”. Terry “Big Kahuna” Ragoonanan nearly scored a couple of times deep into time on. But it was too little to late and the game ended with Sporting going down 9-7.

Racing Guantanamo Report

In the match of the round Racing was up against The Barbarians and it was oh so close and a heart breaking end to a great game. But the match was not without controversy with the umpire somewhat asleep for most part of the game sending Ryan “raging” Platten furious at the lack of foul calling in a number of stages throughout the game. The Mighty Orange battled hard and took it up to their much fancied opponents with Raiko “ The man” Kiudmaa slotting in some wonderful goals early and was supported by Reno “my man” Kurgg and Kait “a man” Lokk. Martin “fritz” Kessler who slotted in a defensive role proved how efficient he is in any position on the field. Ben “I’m here” Jones was giving ample support down back also and Gareth “Orange Gaz” Vickery was desperate in goal. After going a couple of goals up mid way through the second half it looked as though the points were Racing's, but a couple of defensive lapses and a blinder of a goal late in the match saw the game ripped from the hands of the Mighty Orange. It was a fantastic game and one that should inspire. The match ended with Racing going down 8-7.

Our attention now turns to the derby next week, Racing v Sporting and what will be a grudge match and also the return of François “The Rock” Kruger who will play a half in each team's goal. This will go down in Guantanamo folklore where brothers-in-arms face each other in a match that will stir the emotions of all. Feel the pride of a proud club on the rise next week as derby fever hits the BRAC.
