Racing Bow Out Of Finals

Wednesday, 19th May 2010

It is with deep sadness and great disappointment that Racing Guantanamo have been beaten in the Semi Finals by a determined Travelling Royals outfit on Wednesday night. The men in orange were quietly confident that a win in this game would see them going into the Final as favourites, a tag not heard of in Guantanamo history. Was the pressure to much, was the demand from fans clouding the vision of the player’s aspirations. The guys were itching for a win but were crushed in defeat.

The match started with intensity and Racing was trying to emulate last week’s game and get early goals. Solid defense by both teams had the game on edge for much of the first half. Counter attacking by the Royals had Ryan “Workhorse” Platten running wild and with Martin “Fritz” Kessler helping gallantly the defense held strong. Some nifty foot work by Kait “Solid” Lokk and Reno “Gritty” Kurg had the boys sniffing a goal but it was not forthcoming. Ben “Barnstormer” Jones also tried hard to put the score in Racings favour but missing under dogged Royals defense. Another surge by the Royals late in the first half had the ball in the back of the net and ending a pulsating half. It was 1-0 and Racing was under the pump at the dunny break.

The second half was one to forget and the wheels fell off the Racing team. Struggling to counter a dominant offence and critical defensive errors had Racing undone and a plethora of goals were netted by Royals. A goal by Raiko “Brave” Kuidmann in the middle of the half had Racing a hint of a chance but it was to no avail. Some hardy offensive press and some close attacks on goal were not going to dent a stubborn Royals defense. Gareth “Orange Gaz” Vickery tried to tough talk his players for some heroics but it didn’t come. The final whistle blew, Racing was defeated. The men in orange hung their heads in disappointment after a sound defeat. It was a solemn and dejected team that left the ground under no illusions that they were beaten by a better opposition. Final score 6-1.

Congratulations to both Racing and Sporting for a great indoor season coming 3rd and 4th respectively. A season of great football by both teams saw them compete well. The Kruger Bowl will be etched in our hearts forever! Will we see another Derby next year? Be proud and have your heads held high, I am, you are, we are Guantanamo. Bleed Orange.
