Epic Win Gives Guantanamo Hope For Finals Berth Wednesday, 20th October 2010 Racing Guantanamo have made the other B-Liga teams sit up and take notice with the mighty men in orange pounding the top side of the competition Pearl Coast Pirates 2-0. After a painful loss to the Pirates early in the season another would put Racing out of premiership contention but the guts and determination of Guantanamo driven by the heartbreaking defeat sealed an historic victory. With our owner being absent with injury from having a juvenile beat him in the knee with the youths last week and also spending 3 hours at the airport to see his brother leave their was no sign of the gritty right back Ryan Platten, was this a blessing in disguise? Andy Smyth took control of a team that was unnervingly quiet leading up to the start and deeply insisted his players to play for pride. Guantanamo asserted themselves early and pressure was the key and the Pirates were intimidated and looking for answers. The defense and midfield was resolute with Captain and a best game performance by Roland Smethurst who has become the recruit of the season mopping up with precision with any attack from the Pirates forwards desperate to gain the advantage. New signing Gideon Nelson was only on the park 2 minutes and touched the ball once and scored an unlikely goal for his new club floating the ball behind the keeper. The passing was prevalent and was of precision and there was plenty of backing up by a hardnosed orange outfit. The Pirates were defiant and had plenty of the ball but couldn’t find a way past defense and Andy Chapmen in goal who used his head at one point which the ball sailed over the crossbar. Jackson Cordingly looked ominous and it was only a matter of time and another goal was forthcoming. Gaz Vickery was thrust upfront and after a searing run and a celebrated goal of shirt swinging and much fanfare was denied by the linesman for offside. Racing rallied to mid break. 1-0 to Racing at half-time. Hopes were up in the orange camp and continued momentum was needed to repel any late charges by the Pirates. Guantanamo held their nerve in the second half and continued there forward pressure. A corner kick and the tall Joel Hamling headed in another in the back of the net and confidence was up. The club has now banned any recruitment of anyone called Martin after Kessler missed it from 2 yards out after Whittiker did the same early in the season. Chances came and went and Racing were unlucky not to stretch there lead. The final whistle sung through the air like Metallica at a Big Day Out concert and victory was Guantanamo’s 2-0 the final score. Pearl Coast were dealt a lesson in the football code with Guantanamo being hard, ruthless and confronting with and without the ball. A memorable victory and fans were applauding this triumph over the league leaders. Racing Guantanamo are in the hunt and stalking there next victim.
