Another Positive Awards Night for Guantanamo

September 2008 – Divers Tavern

2008 ABC Player of the Year Luke Turner

Racing Guantanamo celebrated the end of an excellent season at the Broome Soccer Association Awards night held at Divers Tavern.

Guantanamo again showed the talent they have at their disposal with one of their own winning the highly coveted ABC Player of the Year Award for the second year running. Last season, goalkeeper Francois Kruger picked up the famous trophy, while this season, young gun Luke Turner managed to bring the award back to the orange half of town.

Turner had an excellent season, finishing as the team’s top scorer and positioning himself to be the club’s next legend.

BSA President Mike Doyle paid tribute to the impact Turner had on the league this season, announcing him as “the best young player Broome has seen in a long time”.

“It’s great to see young Luke get this award,” he said. “I expect even bigger things next year from him.”

Despite rumours that he may try his luck at another club next season, Turner was quick to affirm his loyalty to Guantanamo, declaring “I will stay as long as Guantanamo will have me”.

Andy Smyth also picked up the Captain’s Award for his excellent leadership in marshalling the Guantanamo defence throughout the season.

Guantanamo supporters have been glued to their TVs all season

With Guantanamo gaining a cult following around the world, and building on crowds from last season, 2009 looks to be the breakout year where they are tipped to become the next league champions. With chief talent scout Tim Gray already adding some names to the shortlist, the dream could come true for the next generation of loyal Guantanamo fans who are yet to taste the euphoria of winning a championship trophy.
