Racing Guantanamo AFC held their annual Hall of Legends induction last night, and it was only fitting that the latest inductee be retiring fan favourite Jorge Pereira.

Held at Divers Tavern, major sponsor of Racing Guantanamo, the night was punctuated by beautiful women, free running alcohol and lots of laughs.

Attendees at the night included Racing Guantanamo players Adam Shanley, Chris Hingston, captain Ryan Platten and vice captain Tim Gray. Guantanamo goalkeeper Francois Kruger told the media that he had come down with the latest strain of Ross Rover Virus and was unable to make it, but did provide a video tribute to his outgoing teammate.

Beginning with a sit down dinner and formal ceremony, Platten paid homage to Pereira’s contribution to the team. After the speech, Pereira was honoured with a ‘Hall of Legends’ certificate, which he now keeps at home above his mantelpiece.

With the festivities at Divers coming to a close, the party then headed to Cable Beach where a bonfire was constructed which in Tim Gray’s words was ‘like nothing seen for a long time’.

The night took on an international flavour, with German and Dutch backpackers joining in the tributes for Pereira and honouring him with traditional German/Dutch dancing.

3am was the official closing ceremony as the guests made their way home in preparation for Pereira’s testimonial and final match on Wednesday 30th August.
